Okay that's it. I have a bone to pick with chess.

(This is facetious and borne of frustration. Do not take too seriously.)

I have no idea why how much I practice, how much I play, what I do, and when I play seemingly has absolutely no effect on my rating. Literally none.

Recently I lost almost 200 blitz rating points. Then I got about 100 back, then lost it again.

Did I stop playing daily?

Play when tired?

Stop doing puzzles?

Stop watching chess content?

Do literally anything differently than what I normally do?

No.

Yet somehow whether I gain or loses HUNDREDS of Elo - I have lost, for absolutely no reason, up to 300 ELO before - seems to have zero correlation with anything else I am doing related to chess and it is MADDENING. I lose 8 of 10 games when I am not doing ANYTHING differently than when I won ten in a row!

I don't get it.

It’s just chess man, you tilt every time, but you will never stop improving. Improvement takes time. Don’t worry, after some time you will regain that elo plus some more. What I would recommend is not to play when you are feeling tired or not confident. Plus I try recommending to play only rapid chess since it can help you improve a bit quicker. Idk just a recommendation honestly. It’s ok to be frustrated but at the end of the day, it’s just chess.

Whenever I go on a losing streak, I just take a few days to focus on lessons and puzzles so that I can try out something new against my next opponent. I’ve been logging on every day for almost 200 days and my elo has gone up up up.

In the last 90 days you've played almost 500 blitz games and only 77 rapid. Blitz is not for improvement. If you want to improve, play longer games. When you lose, don't just click new game. Analyze your losses. Figure out why you lost and learn from your mistakes.

No no, look, it's good advice, but "Don't hang your queen next time" is something I mostly grasp.

The question isn't one of improvement. It's "Why, when I do nothing differently than normal, does my ELO still fluctuate by hundreds of points?"

Because chess ratings are all about consistency. The more consistently you play well, the higher your rating climbs. You are an inconsistent chess player and will continue to be inconsistent if the majority of your games are blitz.

Looking at your rating and elo, its very similar to mine, I notice that a lot of the players I face in this elo are very inconsistent, one will play nearly every move top engine till the end, the next, move every three seconds even past 65 moves, I get timed out sometimes, the next will play a 85% accurate game for 65 moves and just blow me off the board. Two things that keep hurting me are playing till I lose, if you lose stop for 30 min don't try to force the play, and don't mix time controls back and fourth. I notice I get slopy after winning 6 or more games in a row, had I just quit for the day and reflected I would be a lot higher elo.
