Arabian mate, Anastasia's mate, Blackburne's mate, these checkmates are so insane. teamwork of bishops knights and rooks, with amazing queen sacrifice... i wish i could get the opportunity to learn more, but at least such things don't happen. rip seeing these 3 checkmating ideas does put a smile on my face at least

Yes, but a lone Knight checkmate via "Smothered Mate" is the coolest of them all happy.png

Avatar of Azathot0

is that with the 2 knights?? and a king

Avatar of KeSetoKaiba

No. Checkmate with 2 Knights alone with a King and no pawns/other pieces on the board can't be forced. Smothered Checkmate is when the enemy King is boxed in by its own forces (smothered) and a Knight delivers checkmate by itself. It is really rare, but aesthetically pretty when it happens happy.png

Yeah, that is one example of "smothered mate" and as @TakeThisPawn says, you can learn these patterns online for free. I'm sure there are probably also books/articles that discuss them too.

Here is a solid list that is more than most people know by name:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Checkmate_pattern

(actually, memorizing the names can be helpful - but not necessary. What is important is being able to recognize these patterns in your own chess games)

A smothered mate is shown towards the end of this video (time 31:31). This video is excellent for beginning players and I highly recommend it. It is presented by GM Yasser Seriawan and tells some funny stories about some of his earliest games when he was 12; 7 years later he was a GM! Audio gets better a few minutes in. There are 7 or 8 great mating positions covered - all played by beginning players.

PS Simple tips to improve at 35:06 (end of the video).
