one year rating increase?

I'm not certain but I think my rating (and average opponent's rating) have both increased about 100 points in 2009.  How about you?

My goal for 2010 is to stabilize my rating above 1800 while only playing against stonger rated players (ie. between 0 and 300 points above whatever my rating happens to be at the time).

What do you consider to be a realistic one year rating increase for a 1600 player with between 10 and 20 hours / week to spend on chess ?  Have you done this yourself?  How???  Cool

I started to play about a year ago, here on chess.com, fristly I got an average f ~1200 but today my real Elo rating is about 1500 (currently I have about 1700 but is so inflated), well, I have improved my chess level studying but a big part of this is to the work on this site, thanks chess.com

I started playing chess again after a lapse of about 35 years, and never knowing anything about tactics or openings and I am now aproching 1500.

I'm not so sure of the starting point of 1200.  When I first played a rated game against an older version of Fritz I'm sure I was rated 985 or something like that.

It's all BS anyway unless you're a pro or semi-pro.

Baznik

I think ratings over time do indicate relative changes in playing strength.  Are you suggesting this is only true when "you're a pro or semi-pro" ?

10-20 hours a week is about 2-3 hours a day. If you study every day & play in tournaments, it's possible to jump from 1600 to 1900 in a year. At that level improving is relatively easy...

I went from 950-1800 (give or take 50) in just over a year. Needless to say I don't expect to see the same level of improvement continue.

Also I believe that the levels of 1000-1800 are mostly based on how you view the board. For that reason I don't see anything preventing anyone from going from 1000-1400/1600 in several months.

It's really just about what you notice, as opposed to what you know, at that level. Of course eventually analytical abilities will be anchored by a need for more chess knowledge.

I've been a member here for exactly a year, and seen my turn-based rating go from 1200 > 1500.

A few members here have said 1200-1600-1800 isn't too hard in less than a years time -- It's hard for me to imagine gaining hundreds of points in one year so easily, even at the sub 1800 level.

I certainly didn't gain strength that quickly -- maybe because I wasn't playing in tournaments, only played blitz, and read only 1 (maybe 2) books.  Is it true that an active tournament player who studies every day could gain 400 points in a year?  Besides the young kids I've never seen that happen.

i started in february with 1200 and now after 10 months I am about 2000. My goal in 2010 is to not drop below 2000, and even if i can to reach 2100 again

It depends on the rating. I doubt anyone is going to go from 2000-2400 in a year. But 1200-1600 can probably be done in much less time than that.

You're where I was last year.  Now I'm at the low end of 1850-1950.  Never came close to 20 hours/week.

How?  Play!

I agree with this. I rarely study.

If you put in the effort every game, you will improve drastically, depending on your mentality. If you play three hundred one minute games this probably doesn't apply, it's if you start analysing everything, thinking through your moves, and realizing where you are making mistakes.

As far as I'm concerned attentiveness and vision beats knowledge most of the time when you're under 1800.

Fast_Thinker

I have gone from 1046 to 1355 this year, and last year and this year it has gone from 660 to 1355. Laughing

Seriosity

I have gone from 1400ish to 2000 in two years. :D

jhan17

In 2010 my rating jumped from ~700 to ~1500. I expect to reach 1700 in less than two years.

ivandh

In 2010 my rating went from 1500 to 1400.

KarpovianMethod

I'm having trouble jumping my current rating. It seems to have dried up at 1900. Any suggestions?

UmairQureshi

I am ranked around 850.. and i havent lost in like 20 matches. when will my ranking increase?

ivandh

When you start playing rated games.
