Online chess should not be rated

Who died and made you queen bitch of the universe? You don't like CC? That's your problem. I think blitz and bullet are pointless wastes of time. But I don't denigrate those that play it. Not my business.... hint hint.

By the way, "they're" = THEY ARE.

If you look at http://www.chess.com/echess/players it shows the following averages for players in chess.com:

Blitz:1087

Standard:1157

Online:1347

So, yes the rating system is not equal across the board.

Says the person who's never played a correspondence game.  Don't like it?  Fine, that doesn't matter to me.  But don't think that anyone needs to listen to your opinion about it.  It would be like me going to a stamp collecting forum and telling them they shouldn't collect stamps from Botswana just because I say so.

I pray thee, what is a "real" rating?

Clearly the only true measure of chess skill is bullet.  Everything else is nonsense. Why yes I do love a good troll and throwing gasoline onto fires is one of my favorite hobbies; why do you ask? Laughing

Nearly all of the online games that I play are unrated. I play a lot of training games against the lower-ranked members of my group, to help them improve... and it seems a bit uncharitable to take rating points away from them. Also, I wouldn't want to be accused of being a "bottom-feeder". So my rated online games are mostly in group vs group matches.

Anyways, imo CC is a real rating (excepting cheaters, who anyways don't play at my low level), and I am tired of people who for some reason think chess was meant to be played in three minutes

That's interesting...presumably this shows that as a "pool" of people playing a particular format increases, so does the rating "pyramid" (necessarily) ?

As a thought experiment. If every player over FIDE 2000 was killed off except Carlsen, his rating would drop ? yes ? Anyone made a study of this who could perhaps articulate better what I'm driving at ?

Further does the increase in FIDE gradings at the "top end" over the years represent in part an increased number of people playing (FIDE rated) chess ?

Aren't you banned yet?

This isn't surprising. The longer a player has to consider moves, the more time one has to calculate, the higher the ratings will likely be.

I think you are wrong Spiritbro77  because both players will get more time, but there will still only be a win, loss or a draw.

Play unrated games

blueemu

The larger the pool, the further apart the outliers will be (the extreme highs and lows).

That won't affect the median, though.

Possibly they are sampling different spaces, though.

WittyBlunder

Another should be 'banned' type post!

hackyourheadoff

the only fair play here is online chess.

in live chess you end up playing puppets. who fake a low rating. even grandmasters that work for chess.com. and simply pic and choose whether you win or not

hackyourheadoff

its cheating and they do

Perhaps you're right. All I know is if I tried to play blitz or worse yet bullet I'd get BLASTED! :) Those games aren't for me. Though I do appreciate the skill other show while playing that way. To each their own. Peace

I think there can be variety amongst different age groups. I play on chess.com to improve my blitz which isn't as good as my OTB play. I think younger players tend to be better at blitz and older players at longer play..."wit versus wisdom" sort of thing Smile

Certainly I'm an older player (58 next month) and I'm absolutely hopeless at Blitz.
