The rule is you can use anything that's static. So yes, grandmaster games are fine, as are opening databases and books. You can't use engines or advice on a specific position or endgame tablebases.

So I'm pretty new to this site, and I started a game of Online Chess. There is so much time between each move that it got me thinking -- what is appropriate for "help" in playing a game (or should we try to get help at all)?
Obviously using an engine to select moves would be cheating. But, I could go to other chess sites and look up GM games with the same opening to get ideas about the strongest moves to play as the game unfolds.
I don't want to do anything that is not considered okay, but at the same time if my opponent is doing this kind of research, it would put me at a big disadvantage. I was just interested in seeing how everyone approaches these games.
Thanks.
