Opponent makes chess move split second after I move?

This has happened a few times now and wondering how an opponent can make a move immediately after I move. I won't have played for several hours and as soon as I move there is a countermove before it moves to next game. Can you program your moves in before your opponent has moved?

in daily chess you are able to set up "conditional moves", where you predict your opponent's next move, and play a response to the predicted move. If your opponent plays the move you predicted, it the server will automatically play your conditional move: your response to the predicted move.

Thanks so much! That explains everything and I must be too predictable!

Smalnight

no problem! There's nothing wrong with being too predictable XD

Well with daily chess you have a lot of time to consider moves and what your opponent will play in response. I'm sure there are some players who will set conditional moves for pretty much every potential move their opponent might make.

Personally, I'm not really a fan of setting conditional moves (though I've used the feature a handful of times). I like to play the game out turn by turn, and prefer to write my candidate moves/possible lines in the "notes" tab.

I noticed the conditional moves are removed in the new version of the site. Are there any plans of a return? I use it very much, especially in end game where I play a lot of forcing moves, and like to finish the game without having to wait for my opponent.

Conditional moves can be a problem, as the player of  Black discovered in this little horror story from a correspondence game in the 1970's:

1. d4 g6 (if 2.  any then 2. ... Bg7)

2. Bh6 Bg7

3. Bxg7

1-0

ModestAndPolite: That's not a conditional move, that's a pre move. There is a big difference.

But the conditional move only kicks in after your opponent has moved, so you're still waiting for your opponent.

Aye, but I'll be finished playing, even though the game still continues.

Conditional moves are there in v3 and you can make more than just one line as a free player (in v2 you could only make 1 conditional move line)
