Just wondering.

I see when people post games here which they won, the vast majority protect(?) their opponent by deleting or changing the opponent name?

I've seem it done, and so I do the same thing. But why?

I certainly wouldn't object if a losing game of mine ended up here, would you? Even if it is a really embarrassing loss?

Aren't all the games kind of public domain anyway?

if i was posting a game with someone, i'd at least ask them if i could post it with their name on it. they might not be too proud of that game. i see what you mean though, most of the time you can find the game in under a minute of searching if you wanted to know who they played against.

sure, they're public domain.  i feel the same way you do, i wouldn't mind one of my games being gone through.  i think it's just a considerate thing.  we don't always think people get upset for reasons that make sense, but it's usually good policy to make a small effort to do something gracious.  it just stops any potential argument before it stops.

Some games i've posted i've omitted both names (obviously i played one side of the board) mainly because, it seems to me the game is the focus really.  If i'm posting a game it's usually for feedback, although i did post one win i had where the guy was almost 300 points higher in rating, but even that wasn't some rub-his-face-in-it post, i was just proud of playing a solid game.  I agree with both of you, if i lost a game and someone posted it, i certainly wouldn't have a problem with that.  I'd love to know why i lost.  Most of the time, i would love to know why i won as well.  But, if i get crushed, by all means post the game.  Be proud of playing well.

As I've said before, I would be insulted if someone did omit my name.  To me, it looks like they're saying you're NN or Amateur (ie, your name isn't worthy of being put in print).  Also, it generally takes two outstanding efforts to concoct a truly great game; if R Byrne hadn't pushed Fischer to the limit (for example), we wouldn't have their game from the 1963-64 US championship.

I wish I was good enough to feel insulted if someone called me an amateur :(

But that's a good point.

Great post Tony, I guess I'd be pleased if someone actually thought one of my games was worth posting (unless it had the words "Noob", "idiot", or "worst player ever" in the title)

Agree that it's probably best to let your opponent know that you've posted the game

Personally, I would mind to see my name posted in the game. I am an amateur player, make tons of mistakes, and I don't want to see it rubbed in my face once again. Most of the game showcases feature comments like "yeah you played well but your opponent was a noob" - I doubt if many of you would like to see such comment for your game. For showcasing the games of masters, I understand that it's a different story and that omiting the names would constitute an insult.

I agree. Posting a game with your name on it without prior consent is an insult. Besides. if a player wanted to know how good or bad he played, he/she can analise that game. The computer will then show the move that should have been played. It is a great tool and one where you can learn a deal from.

Meh, I would consider analysis from actual players to be worth more than just some figures from some computer.

For example, being told I made a blunder because I made a move for a mate in 5 instead of a mate in 4 is not going to help me in the slightest.

Boy, folks around these parts sure do get insulted easily.  It's not as if your name would get posted anyway, just your silly handle.

I'd consider it an honor to be named.I mean....if the person in question really thought their opponent played horribly, why would they even bother posting the game?only douches would do something like that.
