panov botvinnik

The Panov-Botvinnik is a good weapon against the Caro-Kann in my experience.
Just be sure to study the strategies involved in isolated queen pawn positions before playing it.

I shredded a 2100 player in a nice game with that.

More aggressive than the P-B is the Advance variation with e5.

But I'm only here on a phone through the app so I can't post games properly, can't do much of anything.

way back when i was playing otb i saw black almost always trying to trade light squared bishops in the advance variation...is this common?the reason for my questions is im playing my 1st otb tourney in 11 years 2 weeks from now...for the 1st time in my life im spending actual time on the opening...resulting pawn structures etc...so any advice will be helpful☺☺☺

noted thanx☺ im wondering though...do caro kann players favour closed positions like french players?
I used to play the CK and steered for as closed a position as I could. The Advance is certainly sharp, but I didn't have as much of a problem with it as with the Panov. Probably mostly a matter of personal style and psychology. As white, I adopted the Panov and had much success with it, even beating a 2150 in an OTB tournament.
I'd suggest looking at both the Advance and the Panov and going with whichever one you're more comfortable with.
Good luck in your tournament.

thanks Mr Mike☺ im super rusty...the players for the specific tournament has been getting stronger...2014 the strongest player was a 1600...last year a 2000+ won it🙈 as long as i learn from the experience all is well☺ i also believe my preparation will help a lot😆

I know all about being super rusty: next month, I'll be playing in my first tournament in 25 years. The big decision is whether to play in the under 2100 section or the under 1800 section. I've gone back and forth on it; as of right now, it will be the under 2100. No guts, no glory.
Oddly enough, I haven't decided on openings yet. Still reviewing middle game structures and practicing tactics and endgames. There is so much to catch up on, and so little time.

The Panov is not a strong option if black knows the theory. The endgame variation takes all the bite out of it.

Different strokes. I've used the KIA against the Caro with good success. It gets quite tactical if Black opts for e7-e5.
