pawn promotion and checkmating

I have noticed that many people have a fetish for underpromoting. Such people will always promote to rook or bishop if it serves the same purpose as queen. That is not my custom. It seems to me like an unnecessary announcement to your opponent "I'm alert enough to notice that a rook is sufficient.". If a queen logically works I make a queen. A second matter I've noticed is that in a winning position people vary in their attitude about promoting pawns. For example, when playing a person who doesn't resign in a lost position, one sometimes has the choice of.disdaining the need for a queen and mating with the pieces on the board, or pushing a pawn to queen and win that way. I generally play whichever way I think mates faster. Unlike many people I don't resent a player who won't resign in a lost position. But once in a tournament game my opponent was an obnoxious prick, so I decided to torture him. I had him completely beat with an hour on my clock. It was late in the evening and I had an early day the next day. So I did not appreciate it when he took 20 minutes to play the only legal move in a position where he had bare king and I had knight and three pawns. So I made two queens and sacrificed them and then made a bishop and mated him with KBN. Not sure why I posted this rambling post, but I'm drunk already. Happy St. Patty's Day!!
