Pawn promotion to Rook/Bishop

Apologies if this is a rank newbie question.

I can think of circumstances where a pawn promotion to a knight is preferable to a queen - there was a puzzle on this the other day.

But are there any circumstances where promotion to a bishop or a rook is preferable to a queen? I can't think of any, (not that that means anything, of course)

you would promote to a rook instead of a queen to prevent stalemating your opponent. same for bishop

Ah - well that makes sense.

Cheers for that :)

Agreed! A few other reasons are: (1) to cause stalemate, (2) to checkmate your opponent faster, and of course (3) to punish players who refuse to resign.

it depends in the position you are in

dont be afraid for asking that, I promoted for another piece but when playing against novice, just because you already have a queen and want to piss him off.  But when you play hard versus hard players, almost the queen is the option

Likesforest - under what circumstance would this apply? When would a bishop/or rook permit faster checkmate than with a queen?

Take a look at an example I posted a month ago. In that example, White mates a couple moves faster with a rook because he doesn't have to worry about stalemate. And yes, there are real, practical games where this has actually happened.  :)

Cool! Thanks so much for that :)
