Pawns are my greatest weakness

Hi all,

I've started playing chess in the past year or so since my son joined his schools chess club. For my level of experience I think I do okay but I realise I have a lot to learn. One area of my game that I've noticed is very weak is how I use my pawns. Most of the game I am just frustrated they are in the way of the better pieces and I don't know how to make better use of them.

My son is 8 and has taken to chess like a duck to water. Our most recent game on chess.com  I was comfortably leading and he was almost certainly going to lose when he got me in check with his pawn resulting in a stalemate and a loss for me which should never have happened. Points were 32 me to 18 him at the finish I had everything but his king and 1 pawn when the game ended.

If you could give me some tips or point me to a tutorial that might help me understand better how to play my pawns I'd really appreciate it.

Hi, welcome to the chess.com. I am sure there will some guys here will help you out with some tips. Question for you, is there any chances that you might be related to Merv Hughes ? Wink

Good 'Ole Merv eh? Yeah he is a top bloke but I've never met him and I'm not related. He was inspiration for the Mo' thou.

I'm just about to head off to work. I just wanted to say thankyou for your reply it has given me something to think about. I can answer the 1.e4 question I open with that move as it begins the process of controlling the centre of the board which I belileve is very important then following up with Nf3 protects d4 whilst attaching e5. I don't open with h3 as it's off to the side of the board and only allows advancement of one piece the rook, whereas 1.e4 allows either the queen or the bishop to advance into the game.

Ask me about my 5th move though and I have less of an idea of how to proceed. :-)
