People obsessed by blitz and openings

What do you think of people obsessed by blitz and openings. I think these people should stop to call them "chess players", because of course they don't play chess and I'm sure they can't play.

paK0666

I just looked at your games and you are in no position to tell others they can't play chess ;P

I know I'm a patzer, plus I play that games when I was very tired. But at least I'm a serious chess player, not a blitzer who talk about sicilian dragon and can't draw simple K+P vs K endgame (there are people at my chess club like this)

If you play chess well, you should have no problem with blitz or online.

Online correspondance chess is bogus because it's too easy to cheat in any part of the game with a computer, or for the troll with more time to work the analysis board to death.

So we really have no way to verify your trollish BS statements except to play you OTB or blitz.  And if you can figure out how to challenge at blitz, I'll be happy to test you.

Being obsessed with blitz is not a problem. If they like it, why not to play? However, blitz can be harmful for a player who wants to become a good chess player. If you are going to do a marathon, sprinting does not help.
Obsessed with openings: It is a typical problem of weak players, you cannot do anything with that. It is their own problem. Everybody should learn to play chess first. Opening theory is based on chess tactics and strategy, without knowing them opening knowledge is nothing. (I mean memorized lines here)

I feel that both the preference for Blitz and the excessive popularity of opening study might be attributable to the same source... the quest for instant gratification.

Two things, first, just because some idiots cheat doesn't make CC bogus. People have been found cheating in OTB games. Yes, if somebody analysis a position not through the use use of chess engine but his mind that is his capability. Deal with it or shut up.

second,  If you play chess well, you should have no problem with blitz or online.

really??  if u feel bullet and lightening games are chess, good for you.

I like blitz as you can see by my trophies--they are mostly for blitz games. I think its great fun. Also blitz will help you to study your openings. In order to play chess well you do need to have some opening knowledge. Also when you play blitz you learn to undersand what is going on in the game very quickly and this is helpful when watching videos where the commenter is going through a game very quickly. Blitz gives you a lot of practice in a very short time and I'm sure if you played blitz your rating will improve.

Just lol !!

A player rated under 1000 telling blitz players who like openings that they are not "chess players" ??

Ridiculous.

I played only 2 live games, so my rating isn't real.

Here is a hint - stop caring about what the opponent may or may not be doing and use online chess as your personal chess excercise. its really the only form I use here for serious play, and for training for OTB chess. Bullet and blitz I just use as relatively mindless pastimes.

Except for a select few, chess is a hobby to be enjoyed. If you enjoy blitz and or opening study, then that's what you should focus on. It's silly and pretentious to say someone isn't a chess player unless they play/study a certain way. There are many ways to enjoy chess.

Well said. Who needs a coach for a hobby? Just play or study what gives you pleasure.

I have nothing against blitzers, I'm only saying that blitz isn't chess so they can't call them real chess players

Thats like saying sprinters don't run because marathons exist

Blitz is in fact the most popular time control on the web, and it have always been like this atleast the last 15 years. This tendency might influence causual play over the board not to mention most clubs also play blitz on the gathering once a week.

I personally find long time controls over the internet to boring and i quess i'm not alone about this opinion, let just stick with fast chess.

Players play 2 on 2 basketball can't be called basketball players.

Baseball : 3 on 3 baseballers are not baseballers

Volleyball: Beach Volleyball players are  not Volleyball players.

How about Michael Jordan? Oh, he never played 2 on 2 basketball because he was a genuine basketball player.

How about Pele? Oh, he never played 2 on 2 soccer because he was a genuine footballer.

On the blitz:

Kramnik: You know, first of all blitz – it’s just a pleasure. It’s a very interesting game. Of course, those who played in this tournament, well, for them it’ll probably be a little harder, because, after all, there’s a kind of accumulated fatigue, and blitz, it’s true, requires concentration, requires, in general, a certain energy . But today the World Blitz Championship starts, right after the Tal Memorial. And, of course, it won’t be easy. But above all for me blitz is just a great pleasure, especially when you play the strongest chess players in the world. It’s a very interesting game. I know that all the leading chess players play blitz with great enthusiasm. But blitz is a game where your control over the situation is much lower than in classical chess, so a lot depends on how you slept, again, how much energy you have that day, how your head’s working – a lot depends on that. Therefore blitz is a very unpredictable game, and that makes predictions impossible. The only thing I’m absolutely sure of is that all the participants and spectators will enjoy the games. But then last year I was very close to winning the tournament. It was only at the end that I let it slip, taking 2nd place. I’ll try, but, of course, the field’s unusually strong this year. That is, it’s not just the strongest chess players, but also blitz players, so it’s absolutely impossible to predict the result. Come along and support us. Many Russians are also playing, including Anatoly Karpov and the world champion Kosteniuk. So it’ll be a struggle and I’m hoping for a good result.

N. KALUGIN: Just time for one more question: is blitz a good training for brain boxes [literally superbrains - they'd joked early about the (false) image of chess players]?

Kramnik: No, no. Blitz is more relaxation, I’d say.

M. Glukhovsky: Training for the hand. (everyone laughs)

Kramnik: Yes, training for the hand, yes.
