I've never seen anything like this. It's amazing....

How did Petrosian think of the things he did?

It defies logic. It's absolutely superb.

I don't think that in my wildest dreams I would have played 21.Ne3!

Absolutely not! It looks like a blunder. Incredible. He played Spassky like a fiddle.

Boy, he was lucky that fork was there when he blundered his queen away. I never get lucky like that :-(

At what point do you think he saw the winning combination?

I think he saw it before he played Ne3. Petrosian was a master's master. WHen Karpov was young Petrosian beat him and Karpov humbly said after the game "Please, where did I go wrong?" Petrosian proceeded to analyze with him.

This particular example was Petrosian defending his world championship in 66. This is the victory that secured it. If that's the way he plays with the pressure on imagine when it's just a casual game....!!???

Great game and thanks for sharing.

A wonderful game. Time for everybody's-heard-it-before chess-quote #31: Botvinnik, "When Petrosian sacs a piece, resign."

I don't believe that there were many good moves other then Ne3. fxe5, for example falls to Qg5+. Also, moving the rook would have been akward especially after Re1 Rxf4 or Rf2 Ng4. Therefore, Petrosian found the best way to sac the rook.

Therefore I actually think that the second rook sacrifice was the more awsome one, he actually had planned that for quite a few moves.

I think Petrosian saw the winning combination 10 years before that game:

Chess.com users: "Are knights or bishops better"

Petrosian: "Who cares - they're both better then rooks!"

Cool
