For a while now, I've been finding good attacking tactics based upon the notion that minor pieces can run out of squares really fast, especially (though not exclusively) in the corners. Basically, the rule I follow is that if a knight or bishop is down to 3 viable squares or less, it's time to look for ways to close off or leverage those squares.
Does anyone out there have a good rule of thumb for targeting major pieces (rooks, queen) that are likewise short on options? With minor pieces, you don't have the option of a beneficial exchange, so the attack tends to be indirect, but with major pieces, you can threaten them directly with minor pieces.
