Play a computer with rating?

It is totally legal. You need to go into play->live chess. Then select custom challenge. Under that click vs Random and enter the name of the computer you wish to play. They are number Computer1 through Computer20. They are different skill levels of chess engine Komodo.
With the custom challenge you can play either rated or unrated against them.

That is absolutely no different than the abuse that is possible against people both here and in OTB. If someone is crazy enough to play a weak opponent many times, they can increase their rating too.
Ratings here mean very little. Some people like to pretend otherwise. When I'm looking for people that I think know what they are talking about around here, I look for NM, FM, IM, GM, WIM, etc. in front of their names.

And if you think people don't use all kinds of methods to manipulate the ratings around here, you are truly out to lunch.

Do a custom challenge -400 to +50. You are going to be playing a lot of weak players. And that is just one of many methods.

People with higher ratings around here tend to be better players. But I guarantee rating manipulation happens here.
The site is great for playing chess, learning, etc. But it should be enjoyed for what it is. You have to take the ratings, especially in individual cases with a large grain of salt.
I'll give you an example. For various reasons, the rapid ratings here are crazy. There are GMs that have rapid ratings only in the 2000-2100 range. There are reasons for that, and it isn't that the GMs are weak.
If you want a real rating, go play OTB.

Congrats on the cello playing as well. Playing an instrument at that level takes a huge amount of dedication. Most people just don't have the degree of stick-to-it that is required.
