Playing as Black: What to do Against King Pawn Opening Advance

Sort:
MiniMike7

This opening drives me nuts as black. It seems to be the opening with a lot of tricks for white. Usually, I just copy the very first move, moving my king pawn forward 2 squares.

I'm curious about another potential move and perhaps a slight continuation.

1...e5 is fine

A low theory and solid choice is 1...d5. It's called the center-counter or scandinavian defense.

A high theory choice, that none-the-less allows you to survive the opening almost without fail is the pirc. It involves the moves d6 g6 Nf6 Bg7 0-0 but can lead to complex middlegames.

1...e5 is what I recommend.

OP says he doesn't like it thought so  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Why he doesn't like it?

I guess he thinks it has a lot of tricks for white (and that's probably true)

It's usually a crutch opening for noobs.

I should know, I played it for many years.

But it's not as bad as you make it sound. Here's Carlsen winning with it in the Olympiad vs Caruana.

Sure it's a 2nd tier opening (no top GM will use it as a main weapon) but it's good enough to play now and then even at that level, so there's nothing fundamentally wrong with like the Latvian gambit or something.

@MAKWANA nothing wrong with 1...d5. But beginners might think you play it to get your Queen out quickly etc.
