playing the sicilian (it kinda worked)

If you follow the "Dragondorf" move order, the Yugoslav attack gives you a position that looks like this, essentially already much better if not just winning for White. White's game play is also very easy and Black will have a hard time defending this.

This sentence alone is enough to tell us that whatever chess-related comment you make will be completely worthless.

Good job bud.

And why? That just sounds like an entitled moron mentality to me. Besides, who do you refer to when you say "us"?

SirRM23Divergent

The only Sicilian I play is the closed Sicillian as white

It's ver fun and positional

I quit playing e5 when I was under 1000 cause I was too scared of all the attacking stuff that white has. Now I'd still rather play c6 instead of e5

There is no attack when playing the Petrov, the Fischer Defense for the King's Gambit, and the Berlin Defense against the Bishop's opening.

I don't want to learn 3 different openings against 3 different openings against e4. My second move in the Caro will always be d4 no matter what.

Lol Gotham out here really telling beginners to play the kan (the najdorf would be a better option for beginners)

I disagree. Najdorf really sucks why memorize a bunch of stuff just play like Sveshnikov, that's just my opinion.

Needing to memorize a bunch of moves to play the Najdorf is no different than needing to memorize a bunch of moves to play the sveshnikov. Oh but you don’t need to memorize theory in the svesh! So you don’t need to memorize a ton of theory in the najdorf. The existence of large amounts of theory does not mean one has to know all of that in order to play the opening.

TheUltraTrap

Gotham is telling beginners to not play the sicilian, but if they insist, play the Dragon or the Kan

Also, the 3... c5 Caro-Kann has a positive winrate for black, no other move 3 opening has such a winrate.

Maybe stockfish doesnt like it but we wont play like stockfish anyways

Nine out of ten Gotham videos are neither educative material, not a chess lecture, but rather a contest about how many nonsense one can say in one minute.

One out of ten is educative, and you can tell which at once: it is the one with less views.

It's not really about making necessarily insightful videos, but much more about introducing beginners to the joy of playing the game. You criticize that his videos are not chess lectures, but they are not supposed to be. They are little morsels of entertainment that are easy to digest and occasionally offer educational information. However, that doesn't change the quality of what he says when he says something instructive. I also always find it quite amusing that usually the only people who complain are those who are rated lower than him. It's like "I could have explained that better", even though we all know that's not the case. On the other hand, there are dozens of grandmasters who praise him for his work, like Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, Jan Gustafsson, Niclas Huschenbeth, Daniel Naroditsky and Hikaru Nakamura. I don't know who I should trust more when it comes to evaluating his content: A bunch of toxic entitled masters or actual grandmasters? Nobody is forcing you to watch his videos. Nevertheless, he is still an International Master with a hell lot of coaching experience and his opening videos for example are very instructive.

You haven't even seen the video, because you are unaware of the content. Perhaps you should only criticize what you have seen yourself.

My favourite is the Dragondorf.

You get the fun elements of the Najdorf and Dragon, flexibility and counter play without the stress of the Yugoslav Attack.

Admittedly there are many people in chess dot com who are lazy using the search option (and not only that option).

https://www.chess.com/forum/view/chess-openings/how-to-exploit-the-dragondorf

There is also the so-called "Accelerated Dragondorf", where Black delays Bg7, and which is even worse.

Thanks!

Gothams YouTube channel is dedicated to either entertainment or helping lower elos. Beginners need structure and consistency. The kan is an opening that creates a small center, makes pawn and queen moves for the first five moves, and castles later. This would send mixed messages to those still trying to grasp many chess concepts. Thus, the kan is a poor choice to recommend to beginners, regardless of what his video is like.

Now, if his video was an introduction to the kan that would be different, but I get the impression that he advocates for the opening.

it was kinda an introductory, he said that you(viewer) could try to experiment some lines later in your own time

I play the Najdorf. I think Gotham said not to play the Najdorf because most of his viewers are low ELO, and it is the MOST complicated line in the Sicilian. But if you know the theory, the Najdorf can be a dangerous weapon to your opponents. I personally started playing it when I was 1700

His explanation was literally "White has a ton of lines" and then he showed all the moves. He did not incentivate any Sicilain, but he said that if you wanted to play any then try the Kan or Dragon and showed a little bit of what they should do
