I think the only way to discover new things is by experimenting. Through experimenting you might be able to discover your own way of play that most of your opponents will find difficult to beat.

But on the other hand, you should chose the forum on which to experiment from, in my view it is best to experiment on an unrated games which 'may be' played against a computer.

I find playing chess in my own kind of play most satisfying and fun.

if you dont get the openning move right your praticly scewed, the oppening move, allows you to develop pieces in different styles and ways. if you dont get the first couple of moves right your opponent will sudenly take advantage of you, and iff you dont know how to countinue after the oppening your also screwed. so you probaly should read some chess books about oppenings, and experiment them on the computer program. All that being said, Josh Waitzkin played horrible opening moves in the Siclilian as child against IMs because he simply didn't know the opening, and he still would beat them.  It helps to know some, but from my understanding most of us beginners put too much emphasis on openings as opposed to tactics, since the middlegame determines the outcome of most of our games.

Everybody learn in different ways. Alot of people preach the importance of learning opening moves early. The way I did it myself was midgame studies. When I understood how the pieces moved and affected eachother during midgame it got alot easier for me to understand the opening tactics and what it was I was trying to accomplish with my opening.
