Playing with instinct...does it work for you?

Played my first game here yesterday and decided I'd play by instinct. It worked for me...does it work for you? I'll probably lose the next few games but I enjoy losing too. Pure instinctual creativity is I feel the ultimate way to play chess...and the most enjoyable. Happy New Year!

I don't play that way, but had a beginner friend who said nearly the exact same thing you have here.  Seemed about once a game he'd surprised me with a very good move he said he found intuitively.

Of course some intuitive moves don't work out, but we all learn as we go.  Do whatever works for you! :)  (but don't be afraid to learn too ;)

It doesn't work for me; my first instinct is usually bad and often horrible.  I have to put some real thought in to get anywhere near good chess out of myself.  I don't know if this is something that will improve with experience (I've only been playing six months and only about a dozen games total against live human beings), or if I'm stuck with it.

I go off my experience. When my experience with the position fails, I try to calculate. If I can't calculate, then I just guess. Laughing Happy new year to you as well.

I consider myself an instinctual player, since as IMDeviate said, "Knowing how deep to calculate, that's instinct". That, I find is true with me, but also knowing which line to calculate is instinct. Instinct might not work with slow time controls because then only instinctually making moves could cause errors, but in fast time controls, making your moves based on instinct works very well, since if you're in a lot of time pressure, you don't have to completely analyze a position to know that it looks good; you just know that the position looks good for you.

Hey...thanks all 4 your input...I have to agree...and the more one plays it's experience and knowledge of positions perhaps that pushes instinct, adrenalin, experience and pleasure closer together giving one big mass/mess of fun, fear and fire...

I paint the way I play chess...it's about pure creation and quality of thought...I'm far ahead in this respect with my contemporary pictures...chess is a side-line but a necessary influence for my work.

As far as chess is concerned...I think expertise and experience win over instinctual play...but winning is not what chess is about...?

It's New Year's Day so wishing you all a Wonderful New Year!
