I play a lot of overwatch as you can tell by my name and it has gotten me very interested in elo/glicko rating systems.
Let me start of by saying unless you start new players at the bottom of the ladder you're doing it wrong
All arguments in favor of starting people at 1200 are valid and do hold weight, but they look over and diminish the most important concept in a "ladder" system.
you don't get to play in 1200 games unless you've earned it
I've heard all the counter points, but not yet one has convinced me that it's a good idea for me, a solid 925 player has the ability to create unlimited new accounts and waste the time of 1200 players. and whether it actually happens or not has nothing to do with it
all games below 1200 are illigitamate
I look forward to everyone's feedback, thank you
Why should someone that has a 1600+ strength have to wade through a bunch if players in the sub-1200 range to get close to where they should be? It wastes their time and a lot of their opponents get completely outplayed.
Glicko will relatively quickly get players to where they should be, but it's better to have the option to start close to your strength rather than force everyone too low to start.
