There's also a weight for recent activity. If you've been playing a lot recently, then your rating tends not to be affected very much win or lose. If you haven't been playing recently on the live chess server, then every game means wagering more rating points.
Point Scoring

It really depends on how frequently and recently you two have been playing. In a nutshell, the rating bump is proportional to how certain the system is about your performance / current rating. If you've been relatively less active than your opponent, your rating bump may be a whole lot higher.

Sounds a bit unfair that I am penalised for playing more chess...but thanks guys...nice of you to reply...!!!

You aren't penalised, the rating you have is not a prize, it's an estimation of your strength, based on your performance so far. The reason why the rating is affected more (both positively and negatively) is due to the fact that your rating doen't necessarily reflect your current strength if you have taken a break. You may have declined, or you may have studied and risen in strength.
Can anyone tell me how the scoring works on this site? I won in a game against a player and had 20pts added. He won in our next game and had 45pts added and he was the higher rated player. Surely I should score more points for the win over a higher rated player?
