Nice example game, this is very helpful! I think I'd be very hesitant to play f5, giving up the e5 break. Sure, the bishop is bad, but our bishop on c2 doesn't look great either. i'm 2100, I don't think I would have dared to play it actually, while it is a very strong idea.

Thanks for posting it.

Could you give an estimate for minimum rating of a player who is able to judge such 'disputable' positions the same way as you do ?

Any non-beginner rating could do the job. One just needs to have the feel of the position, and a certain degree of stategical understanding.

Here is a lovely example:

The way Black (a strong correspondence player) lost this game is almost comical. Apparently he had too much faith to the engine's evaluation, which after 19.Nh2 is around -0.70.

Of course this evaluation is light years away from the truth, which is- black is risking ending up with an entombed bishop after an eventual f4-f5, and he MUST take radical measures to prevent it.

How difficult is for a human to feel that the f4-f5 push is a dangerous plan? Not at all. Apparently Houdini disagrees, until the position is already BLR.

Backing up a move and letting Stockfish look at White's 19th move alternative, both 19. Ne1 and 19. Nh2 are in the top 4 moves (although both still evaluated between -0.25 and -0.5), both followed by 20. f4.  So it's not like he shouldn't have seen the plan behind these moves, and then as you say "strategical understanding" must then guide whether you think you should trust the engine or not.

So far some of the games have gone like this:

Is this enough fireworks for you all?Tongue Out

blumzovitch you are really off forum subject now. Eariier when i tried to make a game with you it said you were not accepting challenges. That is one of the reasons I got a replacement.

Scottrf

Crazy looking line! Interested to watch as I know nothing at all about the Ponziani.

I figured you be trying the Fraser.  Sorry about being off topic, I just responded to something else in this thread, as have a lot of others.

Maybe you should consider making a group on the Fraser and directing the discussion there so you can have more control.  Sorry again for being off topic, enjoy your games.

OK Everyone  this is something that BrianWall has been playing for years.

It is his idea except the lines came to a draw.  I am going to try and make the lines end up with Black better.  BrainWallChess@yahoo.com

Also see his postings in The Ponziani forum.

I invite BrianWall to post here but please no analysis.

Mainline_Novelty

lol I haven't even turned my engine on yet Tongue Out

I have not turned on my engine as was expecting this reply.

Mainline_Novelty

er...I just realized I accidentally played 9.cb instead of 9.Rg1 Embarassed

I tried finding the game with 19...Qf2 but I don't see you guys playing that.  I have found a line where stockfish is giving Black -0.56 on move 15, but White has a different try 3 moves earlier.

UPDATE: In that other line, Black is evaluated as down by -1.1 after Black's 12th move.

Mainline line on the line you accidently played Black gets an advantage with 10. ...Nxh1  If you would like to give up that game and start where you meant to play you may.

blumzovitch i do not know what line you refer to .  you may message me on it but please do not discuss games here.

Mainline_Novelty

Yeah, thanks.

As you see I am not referring to specific moves.  I have an idea to facilitate this discussion though, please bear with me.

I've created the following group for those that might like to analyze the line Ponz is playing, the Fraser Defence:

http://www.chess.com/groups/home/rip-ponziani

I will *not* be accepting members who have ongoing games with ponz111 until they are finished: this is for the rest of us to analyze as they play.  When they are done with their games they will of course be most welcome.

ponz111

One game over--it does not really count as Mainline_Novelty accidently made a move that he did not mean to make and resigned. So we will start again with the real game. But for the record here is the game.

blumzovich

You know what the shame of this is?  My coach has convinced me to switch to the Sicilian from 1...e5 so I may never get to use this Cry

Finally... found a forced draw line.

It's a sad state of affairs when that would be good news for White.
