Poor Sportsmanship

I just finished a game where my opponent blundered away his queen in the end game and then claimed it was no fair that I took it because it was obviously a mouse slip. He had 1:30 left on the clock and let the clock run out.

Why do this? If you're not going to accept a loss gracefully, then stay out of the game.

josip007

yeah that is a common thing here, just ignore it and enjoy your win

I hate this type of people >_< Once I was playing against a user and forked his queen with king, then he offered me a draw and started telling me "accept it. You don't deserve the win " . I denied. Then he just left the clock to run out .

I’ve lost a harem of queens playing Qd7+ through a mouse slip, or lifting my finger from the iPad too soon.

I do hate mouse slips - but I've never even considered it was unfair for my opponent to take full advantage of it - whatever next?

I once played an opponent and I blundered away a piece and two pawns early in the middle game. He failed to take advantage and I eventually mated him. His response was that I should have resigned when i was down the piece and two pawns !

Ignore and Score !!!

Yep. In blitz, anything goes and there are good reasons to never resign.

On line chess has probably only made things worse in that regard.

Well, to be honest I do observe that many many Chess Players lack sportsmanship and respect for the game. This is so common to see. We need to change this.
Also, chess is not a sport. It's a game, unfortunately. So, there goes your 'sport'smanship.

Difster

Even Kasparov was a poor sport at times from what I understand.

HowFaresTheKing

It is frustrating. I was trying to castle at the beginning of a game yesterday, and my finger slipped and I accidentally moved my king one space for no reason instead. I had to change my entire game plan to manage it, and I still lost, but it is part of the game. It happens to you occasionally, and it happens to your opponents. It averages out. People need to chill.

Many new players here are used to winning a lot of chess games with their friends. When playing average people who are not hobbyists, a player with an 700 - 800 rating on chess.com is a very formidable opponent. It can be a big adjustment to be on a website where there are a huge number of amazing players, where that fancy four move checkmate they know is worthless, and where some people write comments basically referring anyone with a rating below 1600 to the video on how to move the pieces or ask if them whether they have learned about castling yet. lol

I am also interested in the comments by people who say that, over time, they can't seem to get their winning percentage very far from 50%. Well, the rating and opponent selection algorithm is set up to make sure that is the case for most people.  For the middle 80% of players, over a large number of games, their cumulative winning percentage stays relatively consistent near 50% because when you win more often, your rating rises and you gradually get tougher and tougher opponents until you are back to close to winning 50% of the time. I have discovered that this in not obvious to some people who don't understand why they can't seem to significantly improve their long-term, overall winning percentage. There is no reason for that to frustrate you. Most people have the same experience.

Finally, if you can't manage to be polite and gracious to your opponent, then please consider just not saying anything.

you are being even more ungrateful than your opponent. try appreciating the win, you might feel better.
