I don't think anyone will spark America's interest in chess like Bobby Fischer did.
Popularity of Chess since Magnus Carlsen became World Champ
back in bobby's day there wasn't much else to do except listen to music... there was no internet and there were no computer games for chess to compete with. This must have been a factor in the popularity of chess back in bobby's day.
Also there was a "Let`s take down the russians" thing happening. And Bobby was a great character, until he went nuts there in the end.
Thats what the craze was about. The US made Fischer's world championship match into part of the Cold War. It wasn't because Americans had nothing to do lol. That's just idiotic.

Back in Bobby's days, people wanted to take their minds off the Vietnam war, and Watergate. You can't go by the flavor of the month. Look at all the people who got their kids into golf after Tiger Woods. Chess hasn't done anything with this installation of Magnus. What is more interesting is wheather Kasparov will be president of FIDE.

Obviously Magnus will not have the same effect that Fischer did for chess. There's no argument there. But has it done anything on a smaller scale? I noticed an increase in chess participation in clubs and tournaments in my area for sure.

When you accuse someone of making an idiotic point be careful not to misqoute what they actually said because you run the risk of making an idiot of yourself. I said there wasn't much else to do back in Bobby's day which might have been a factor, not the defining factor, but a factor, in the popularity of chess when Bobby came along.I did not say that Americans had nothing to do as you asserted .. please double check your facts before you post your slanderous words. Thank you.

Right back in those years there was literally nothing to do except music. What did they do back in those days without video games oy vey. Whether it is a factor, or defining factor as you stated, its still a silly comment. And had nothing to do with the chess craze in the US in that day.

I will say that since Magnus Carlsen has been champ, the popularity of talking about him on Chess.com has gone through the roof.
There are about ten new Carlsen discussions started each day, and most of them are veiled platforms for hero-worship.
You people remind me of those Saturday Night Live Bear's Superfans, except with Carlsen.
After watching Carlsen win the World Championships, you started playing chess on chess.com. Welcome to the Carlsen bandwagon.

Just before Bobby's days, Americans in the 60's had a lot to do. We had 3 major assacinations, and a lot of hippies got beat up. We had Woodstock, Atlemont, and the moon landing. To 1899Club; this magnus crap is a coordinated attack on this site by idiots. It will pass. What Fischer did was delute the minds of many children by showing you can make a living by dropping out of school. Well, 20 yrs later, those same kids are learning YOU CAN'T! Real chess players are more concerned about the FIDE elections, rather than kissing magnus's butt.

Magnus Carlsen is huge all around this area. Recently Magnus has agreed to endorse a famous brand of pre-made hors d'oeuvres that you can heat and serve. Grocery stores in Germany are having a hard time, to keep now this brand in stock.
Magnus Carlsen is the face -- the Mark -- of our youth culture generation people.
Eh... he's basically unknown in Germany.

Stores in Germany are having a hard time kepping them in stock, BECAUSE the're pre-made hors-d'oeuvres to heat and serve. NOT because the're endorsed by dumb magnus.

A few of my friends that used to play chess but stopped, they took up the game again recently.
I don't think they're big Magnus fans or even Magnus fans at all. But for some reason, they decided to play again after the world championships.
It's the "Carlsen effect". The "Carlsen effect" doesn't have anything to do with Carlsen being a big star or anything. It's just somehow the image of chess is changing with Carlsen beating Anand. With a younger champion from the West, younger players and parents of younger players from the west are more likely to take up chess after seeing what Magnus did. Obviously, Magnus is nowhere near mainstream like Fischer was, and is unknown in a lot of places, but amongst chess circles, he has sparked more interest for sure.

Today, I saw a boy in the tube and the first thing I though was 'he looks like Magnus'. He was holding a tablet in his hand, and when I looked at it, I saw it was some chess app. True story!
Has chess become more popular since Carlsen took the title? I've seen few more kids join my local chess club lately and the past weekend at a OTB tournament in my city there was a record high number of participants.
Carlsen effect or coincidence?
