Pre-move explanation

Could someone please tell me the ins and outs of Pre-moves, how it is Beneficial and it's detriments. Rules on if your opponent moves some where unexpected.

The only point is to save time on your clock.

If the premove is a legal move, it is made regardless of what your opponent does.

Don't make dangerous premoves. Most people only premove for recaptures since if your opponent does something unexpected, the premove will be canceled since it would be illegal (can't move a piece onto one of your own pieces).
