Probing the A.I.

Part of the fun I have with computer chess games is learning their strategy quirks and then playing around with them.  This can lead to unusual positions as I show in the image.

I have labeled this one "Positional Advantage - White". (from preloaded pc game "Chess Titans" @ lvl 10)

Neither.   In this program, the only option is to choose "Difficulty Level" which I had set and always keep at the most difficult level of 10.  The other levels are too weak to be of much interest.

I also enjoy playing around with other strategy games like "Starcraft" by finetuning particular scenarios and observing the A.I.'s response.

This is the stock chess program that comes on the Microsoft OS, i think windows Vista had it and/or maybe windows 7. This program is terribly stupid. I'm no GM or even advanced and have been able to beat Chess Titans on the regular basis (Lvl. 10 - most difficult) The most apparent flaw in the AI is that it is too easy to trade the computer pieces for position. You can feed Chess Titans minor peices for crippling, game winning position. I'm no expert on how computerized chess programs calculate but i know that difficulty is based on how deep it will calculate moves. Some systems will calculate every possible move, 12 steps deep. wich gets multiplied exponentially. I'd say Chess Titan's is probably only calculating several moves ahead and is programed to favor points over everything. So you can consistanly trade your rook for a "mate-in-3" type of position quite often. I'd recommend any other basic chess software over this particular one. The tChess app for mobile devices is quite nice as it rates you and you play in your class for constant improvement and higher difficulty. Or you can play 2500 level chess off the bat.

Several players rated around 1700 on this website say they split games with "Chess Titans" when played at level 10.  It seems somewhat odd that a person, such as yourself, who is rated at less than 1000, claims to regularly beat this program on level 10. Just saying . . .
