I understand that stopping cheaters or detecting all cheaters, even detecting 50% of cheaters in rapid pool is close to impossible: they don’t cheat the entire game, but they cheat on some critical tactical/strategical points.
I have a suggestion to make the pool more interesting. This can be done by simply adding more options to match making: let players decide what type of players they want to face to, here are some examples, add your own suggestions:
1. Ask if player had played at least x games in category y (y=rapid,blitz,bullet)
2. Ask if player rating is at least x in category y (currently in rapid match making only rapid rating will be checked),
3. Check if win rate of player is within specific range
4. Check if player is new account
5. ….
Of course we can check all these items and abort the game, but aborting many games leads to bad points, also at least 90% of my rapid opponents fall in a category that I’m afraid that they are cheating, thus it is not a good idea to match them in first place.
If I was a law maker, I would have charged cheaters for thousands of money since they waste precious time of others with engine play.
