Question about rating

So I typically play a longer time game.. usually 30minutes~. Which on here is still considered a Rapid game mode. ALWAYS the elo I can possible gain is from +6 to +12 or somewhere from -4 to -8 for a loss. When I play blitz game mode, the elo for winning is double that. Sometimes around +20 or more. Is there some kind of penalty for playing longer timed games? The average elo of my opponents are relatively the same in both game modes.

There should not be any difference in how rating is calculated in Blitz vs Rapid.  However, there are two factors which can contribute:

  • The ratings of you compared to your opponents
  • RD (rating deviation)

The second bullet is generally the more critical thing to think about; considering you say you generally play more Rapid than Blitz, this is more likely the reason.  The more games you play, the lower your RD, and that in turn reduces the amount of "swing" you will get with each win and loss.  If you don't play Blitz much and/or don't play for a significant period of time, then your RD will rise again.

Thank you that makes much more sense. I wasn't sure if it was because of the longer time frame or not, but you cleared it up!
