Could studying really be the key ?

Pretty much, but the kind of study needed to get to GM level is beyond most of our means.  You can get to 2000+ level and still have some semblance of a life, if you're talented enough, but getting to GM level means abandoning the kids, divorcing the wife, quitting the job, turning your back on all your friends and basically becoming a full-time chess student.

Most of us, regardless of potential, simply won't be able to do that.

were Fischer, Kasparov, Karpov and all those guys not living a life outside of chess?

thecentipede

they all had too much natural ability. if you dont have the natural ability like them it will just be a constant slog

Feufollet

...was looking up on Fischer, Karpov, Kasparov to see if they had children wife...nothing on their personal life...though Fischer got into some really serious political entanglements...didn't know chess could be so dangerous!

I guess sarcasm isnt always clear over the internet @ BarghestOWhitby

Feufollet

hm. I was looking at a Nimzoindian Defense game of Karpov...

I saw that the moves Karpov made was "intriguing"...I thought the moves weren't natural ...turns out he lost that game to a weaker player...

So I guess maybe GMs also have off days

Read swiftly biographies on Fischer, Karpov and Kasparov...they seriously studied chess at a very young age and Fischer and Karpov had coaches

so -- naturally talented or not...they all studied the game from very early on...they didnt just play it.
