Karjakin- If Carlsen wants to beat me he needs to show the best play of his life

This is what Karjakin had to say about his encounter against Magnus Carlsen in a recent interview. (Interview can be found here - https://chess24.com/en/read/news/karjakin-if-carlsen-wants-to-beat-me-he-needs-to-show-the-best-play-of-his-life)

What do you call this? Arrogance? Over ambitiousness?

Crazychessplaya

Buffoonery.

Rocky7788

Whoever is the world champion

I am the strongest player

I just don't compete to give others a chance

ChessOfPlayer

Exactly how Laker put it.

DoctorStrange

I think Karjakin is threatening Carlsen by saying that. He said his team is big. So I guess, someone taught him to physiologically threaten others? grin.png

Just trash talking, the kind that you hear nowadays before every major sports competition.

Twpsyn

I wonder how the Grandmaster blitz battle with Nakamora is affecting Magnus and his prep for the world champioship game.  He can't be taking both those competitions all that seriously.

nimzomalaysian

You're right, the two events are spaced very close to each other. This might give Naka an unfair advantage, also the best chance of beating Carlsen.

Arisktotle

Magnus will not need to show his WC preparations in the Blitz match against Nakamura. The only preparation he will need for that match is ten repetitions of Chopins minute waltz per day. Wink

A bit of self-confidence as well as trying to get under Carlsen's skin. Remember that chess is psychological warfare. A few WC matches have had that "war of nerves" aspect to them, but the '72 Fischer-Spassky match most of all. Karjakin's comments are a little reminiscent of Fischer's, though I don't think he has the same chances as Fischer to win the title.

Wishful thinking Magnus is too good.

Check and Mate as Tarrasch once said to Lasker!

Dark_Army

It's actually true.

Anything less than the best from Magnus and he won't beat Karjakin.

Keep in mind though, this doesn't necessarily mean that Karjakin will win the game. It will draw.

So in short, if Magnus plays less than his best, Karjakin will draw....or perhaps win.

On the other hand, Karjakin will need to bring the brst chess he has ever imagined, to beat Carlsen.

It is doable, Karjakin beating the Magnus. But Iwouldnt put money on it.

Or Paganini's Moto Perpetuo. :-)

xman720

Or Mozart's "Dies Irae".

AIM-AceMove

Well.. technically speaking he is the best out of the best candidates and will requiare somewhat higher concentration and play in WCM (worldchampionshipmatch)

But at other hand.. yeaaa he got "little" bit too much C**ky.

But again this is not a surprise. Every time in every sport when 2 teams are facing each other, each one speaks trash talking for psychologicall advance over the other.

If he says i am scared Magnus probably will smash me, it wont bring him any good. I do believe is will be very very close match and everything is possible. Before my final opinion i want to look how magnus handle Nakamura in blitz.. what if Magnus loses by a lot to Naka? Wont that  reduce his chances vs Karjaking?

xman720

If Magnus loses to Nakamura, karjakin should be  worried about the amount of preparation Magnus is preparing for him.

baptistpreach
If Karjakin wants a shot, he'd need the absolute best play of his life. But probably better play than he has in his system. Nice try to redirect by him though!
loubalch

There's nothing wrong with a bit of inflation and bravado, even if its main purpose is to bolster his own confidence. Carlsen will certainly come prepared, but I doubt he's quaking in his boots.

Karjakin's record against Magnus in classical games is only +1-4=16. So Sergey will have to bring his best game to the table if he hopes to have a chance against the champion. Even if he does, Carlsen could still triumph with less than his best effort. I'm looking forward to the match!

Given, 'domestic' political-and-alleged 'superpower' tensions, & possible undefined 'skullduggery'..{unrelated, to 'chess'}.. I'm Not sure, that the 'match' will 'go forward'.. as planned!? o:
