sigh. . . since I said I was fascinated by the paradox and not that I was surprised by America's failure to live up to its own ideals, don't you find your own assumption of my perceptions a bit distorted as well as presumptuous?

What assumption?  You explicitly stated it was paradoxical for the US to be critical of a state seeking independance from foreign domination.

batgirl

"What assumption?"

Now, put on your thinking cap for a moment . . .
You asserted that I was surprised by America's seemingly hypocritical reaction because I noted my interest in the paradox.  One thing doesn't follow the other. . . but you assumed it did.

ncpharaoh

This is getting out of hand. Pop block them from writing in your forum.

What do you imagine the word paradox to mean?  You are seriously planning to assert it is both hypocritical and paradoxical, then try to maintain it is unreasonable to describe you as evincing surprise?  Perhaps it was hypocritical, paradoxical, but wholly expected?

batgirl

Pop?  :-D

Now it's gotten out of hand.

ncpharaoh

Are you jealous bat girl or is it bat boy or bat hermaphrodite, I don't know I get confused by your catty comments and your cartoon avatar.

What is your name again???????????

Popinjay

Batgirl is a literary terrorist, who hides behind a mask of trepidation and mendacity.

Dear Jenkins12,

Thanks for the comments !

The word Shah ( pronounced Shuh) is used today all over India when announcing Check ! When announcing Check Mate we say Shuh and Mat (pronounced as Maat). You will realize that the word Maat has migrated westwords as Mate and in English it is used to mean in non Chess usage  as to lock or  to join together.

English languge as all modern languages has plenty of words originating from the ancient languages.

Incidentally,we don't use the word Queen for that piece but use the word Vajir

meaning Grand Vizier or Prime Minister.

All the best for Australia and will hope and pray for best sporting relations with India. We have just soundly beaten you in Cricket you know.Again ,just in humour and no offence meant.

Have you ever heard of the game Chaturanga?

Dear Beelzebub666,

India's GDP is estimated to rise by about 7% in FY 2008-2009, next only to China.

The GDPs of so called G-10 ( forget G-20) economies are not rising but contracting.

Please do read about British Economy in the14th Feb.edition of the Economist.

As regards, invention of Chess or Zero, please let me have your sources for any  claimant other than India i.e any other "older variant".

Beelzebub666 wasn't inaccurate in saying that the GDP of India wasn't in the top ten. And usually extremely fast growth rates indicate that a country was in a poor condition to start with (due to diminishing marginal returns and such)

Dear Popinjay,

Yes of course ! The word Chaturanga was used in India for Chess for times upto the British colonial days when the British terminology took over and the word Chess started being used. The rules also changed a bit with pawn allowed to move two squares for the first move instead of only one square even for the first move in Chaturanga. There was no en passant capture in Chaturanga. Most importantly certain regional variations of Chaturanga permitted capture of only  the unsupported pieces. Games were naturally long drawn out and tedious.

Dear Bondiggity,

My contention, right from initial post, was about the RATE OF RISE OF GDP and not about total GDP. Total GDP of India is nowhere in the first twenty countries of the World. It is also true that on a  base of smaller rates of rise, the present rates of rise look impressive. But the rates are about 7 to 8% for the last 4 to 5 years, for us poor Indians to think that, yes,we will also occupy our place in the Sun,before long.

The best authorities agree with rvsakhadeo about the origins of chess and the number Zero, but sadly his country's ascendancy in the world of cricket is founded on deceit, corruption, poor sportsmanship, and rank moral turpitude.

[just kidding :-)]

Dear HotFlow,

We Indians have come out of our sense of inferiority by sheer hard work and inspite of immense problems and a hostile neighbourhood. Facts are Facts are Facts.Nothing wrong in National Pride so long one is not jealous of any other nation.

rvsakhadeo

Dear Jenkins12,

That hurt quite a bit. Even as a joke.
