I had this one opponent who said in the chat that it's best to play rapid and longer games here, while using opening books for the initial stages of the game, during a live game. Is this not cheating? But how can anyone prove someone is playing with theory books? Can't come to think of any successful way, how to prove something like that??
baddogno

Of course it's cheating.  He'll get caught.  Nontitled players are only booked up a little.  When you open like a GM but play like a class player, folks figure it out eventually. IMHO

Sneakmasterflex

Folks figuring it out? But isn't hard proof required to ban someone? That kinda cheater could just go on saying he studied the opening lately and that's why he or she plays it better than the other stages of the game...As for peole figuring anything out, well enough to say that I and other players rarely meet the same opponent twice(exept if friends), so people wouldn't remember any handles of cheaters anyway, and thus people wouldn't figure anything out at all. Seems like this is a common/silenced problem here on chess.com ..Would me interesting if some moderators weighed in here.

All a moderator is going to say is that the discussion should be held over at the Cheating Forum.  The owner doesn't want cheating discussed in the general forums.  I'll get you a link...

Generally speaking, even if someone is using an opening book, they will be on their own within 10 moves if not sooner. Their opponent is going to deviate unless they are booked up themselves.

But baddogno is correct. It is not allowed and discussions of cheating are not allowed in the general forums.

ChessOfPlayer

That is one of my favourite time controls. If someone was doing that in our game I would go mad.

Senior-Lazarus_Long

It is in live chess. You can use books in coorespondance.

ChessOfPlayer

Just for clarity, the use of books, databases and engines are a form of cheating in live chess. This kind of stuff is only acceptable in CC chess

And for more clarity, engine use in any format here is against the rules.

Engine use is prohibited. The player has to make the move choices; in general, electronic opening books/trees and databases are allowed, but not if you are getting numerical evaluations of the engine along with it.

I have tons of chess books which I used to study. I would never dream of using them during a game. How would that help me improve? I don't really understand cheating. If you build your rating by cheating, how would you play if you had to sit down across someone to play a game?

Is use of the Game Explorer cheating?

Martin_Stahl

In Live, during a game, yes.

ol_my

What is "in Live"?

What is the Game Explorer for?

Sneakmasterflex
No one is really answering the question. We cannot know for sure if someone is playing a 30min with the help of opening books or not?!?! As an example...Guess these cheaters will be slower in the opening when they look up the moves...

Live means not Daily/correspondence. So, games you play on the Live server; games in minutes, not days.

Game Explorer can be used for study and daily/correspondence games; games with 1 or more days per move allowed.

Martin_Stahl

Sneakmasterflex, you're not specifically being answered as discussing cheating is not allowed in the general forums.

This is treading a fine line already. Just trying to answer what is allowed/disallowed by the TOS and site rules.
