Ive just started getting serious about chess. I have different ratings for blitz and daily. If someone asks me my rating which do i use? Which is more accurate?

First I'll answer your question. You tell people whatever you want. If all you do is say online I'm ____, then they'll probably ask which website and what time control. Now I'll talk about how chess.com compares to OTB (which means Over The Board. e.g. USCF or FIDE tournament play).

There have been plenty of topics about this (google for more opinions).

But in general daily (formerly called turn-based) and rapid tends to be inflated. Blitz and bullet tend to be closer to OTB ratings.

Remember rating are relative to your opponents. New players tend to play longer games online because they're not used to timed chess. So the rating pools with longer games tend to have weaker players on average, so it's easier to get higher ratings. That's why those tend to be inflated compared to OTB.

At the other end of the spectrum, titled players (and frequent club players) play all their serious stuff OTB, and play online just for fun. So they play fast time controls online (blitz and bullet). So those ratings tend to be harder to get. It just so happens they're roughly the same as OTB (depending on where chess.com started people it could have happened to be much higher or lower. For example lichess blitz and bullet are inflated compared to OTB). Very strong players also tend to play speed games because it's a good way to reduce the likelihood they'll play a cheater (chess.com has automated and human cheat detection).

Having said all this, this is of course on average. Some IMs and GMs are bad (relatively speaking) at speed chess. Some FMs are blitz specialists and have very high speed ratings relative to their other ratings.

So the only way to know your OTB rating is to play OTB.

thanks for the full explanation sammy. Right now I do not play OTB, however, I am thinking about joining a local club.
