Real ratings

goldendog> What is the dc rate for long games? 2/13 fair or what?

That mostly depends on your Internet Service Provider. In 98 games I've been disconnected 3-4 times, so 1/25 to 1/33. I protect myself two ways:

  1. I only play unrated if my opponent's rating is 400 less than mine. I don't want to lose 200 rating points in one shot when I'm disconnected.
  2. I mostly play 8+5 to 15+5. Being disconnected at 45+5 is too frustrating and as the game gets longer the chance of disconnects increases.

I do the same.

I hope long live is accurate, because it would be nice to have a 1650 uscf. Mine is about 1350, but it's extremely underrated because I haven't played in enough tournaments for my improvements to show.

I was also getting disconnected about 1 in 10 of my blitz games as well. Just bad luck I suppose.

So was I! So i stopped playing live chess. Chess ratings here are inflated but by how much is unknown. It seems to vary from player to player based on who they play how well they play and so on.

My chess.com rating is 1730 and my USCF is 1425, though I feel i'm atleast 1600+ USCF(not enough tournaments). My friend Is rated about 1900 but has a lower chess.com rating 1700-1800. It really changes from person to person and if you don't know where you stand trying to compare these ratings isn't a very good idea.

I should elaborate. If you have an accurate USCF rating and an accurate live chess rating, they will generally match up fairly close.

Of course if you played in one USCF event 10 years ago, you have no right to compare that rating with anything.

I've come to really rely on the  "analysis boards"  in real live chess i wouldn't have that.....Plus online there is less pressure and no need to worry about personal hygiene, so i guess chess.com rating will always be higher than real world ratings like FIDE ratings...But playing alot here would probably help one's real world ratings i guess...just thinking outloud....

can you get a fide rating online

Correspondence ratings are crap.  Always have been and they always will be.

Live ratings should be closer to the truth but many of the issues already brought up throw a monkey wrench into the equation, not to mention all the lower rated players who cheat just to get some quick points off higher rated players.

If you want an accurate rating you're going to have to play OTB.

The internet will never be as respected as OTB play.

hahahaha I think I just helped to strongly oppose the point I was trying to make.

From my observation, live chess ratings (LONG) are generally fairly accurate when compared to USCF, either 100-150 points off either way.

lol.  I also started trying to figure out which point you were making.

No. You have to play in FIDE rated events and these are all OTB.

Online ratings are what they are - they reflect your strength playing chess online against other players doing the same. They certainly aren't meaningless, but they do not equate to OTB ratings. I use Games Explorer and the Analysis board a lot, and this makes up for my bad memory, so I'm a much better correspondence (or online) player than I am OTB.

I've run into a couple players who say their otb is higher than their chess.com rating.  According to one, it's hard for him to give his online games the same concentration and importance?
