Reality Check

Just got destroyed for 11 games in a row. Maybe 2 of them were somewhat close losses, the rest were knock outs.  Not sure what this guy's rating was, the games were played anonymously at another site, but I feel like I just played Magnus. Sigh, what a reality check.  He seemed to know every trick there is in every opening. I need to hit the books man lol.

I should probably lay off these anonymous games. They're fun sometimes, but not today. No chance I would be paired with an opponent like that in an online rated game.

I guess you had no previous experience play vs anonymous accounts. I am impressed you played 11 games though...

A really stronger opponent will not play against you 11 games in a row when he/she wins easily, especially if doesnt know you ( being a friend ). I think you played against a Android-cyborg. Get over it and dont lose your time again like this....The Queen will not be so proud for her daddy.

Android check...real enough Smile

It was me that kept hitting rematch. The first few times because I really did think I could put up a better fight, the last 6 or so times I offered rematches, I blame on temporary insanity. The games were all 3+3. I didn't really sense that it wasn't a human, but I guess that could be. If it was a human maybe they indulged me because I played at least somewhat knowledgeable chess, enough that I was fun to beat lol.

...you must check your average true rating because it seems you played a 1600 trapper and those hardly can impress a true 1800 player! maybe you have holes or weaknesses against those 1600 traps speculative moves!

I definitely have holes and weaknesses in my play. A good player plays good most of the time, I don't. Sometimes I'll outplay a stronger opponent, and sometimes I will get outplayed by a much lower rated opponent.  At times I can be really focused and play well, but I don't have the ability to turn on that focus at will, it comes and goes. This is really apparent when I play frequent opponents. One night I'll win most games against them, the next night it feels like I'm not playing chess, I'm playing toggle the resign button. I haven't hit the books in a while and have been lazy. need to get back to it if I want to be a more solid player. The guy I played last night was simply a better player than me, whatever rating he, she, or it was.

I watched my rating plummet briefly yesterday into the 15xx range (normal is closer to 1800), but it bounced back.  At one-minute, it's often that I'm just slower, not weaker, and I think that's why people hate fast time controls.  If your speed is off, your rating will plummet, giving the impression that you might be losing your skill, or even your mind.

I can't play fast. I like fast time controls and find them fun, but I'm awful at it. I usually fare ok when there's an increment. I'll spend most of the time on the middle game, and play endings fast using the increment.

I find threads like this very strange. What exactly do you expect people to tell you? You lost a couple of games. It happens.

I come to the forums without an agenda simply to chat with others who share the same interest. My posts aren't intended to annoy anyone, to seek help with my game, or to be given a magic formula to avoid losing streaks like this, but rather to share my experiences with some of the acquaintances I've made here.

I like fast time controls because cheaiting becomes increasingly difficult, I can practice more openings and games in a shorter period of time, and there's no better way to test my knowledge than to have to summon it quickly.  I think playing fast helps me improve my strength in my areas, which is why I do it.  I'm picking up about 150-200 points a year in strength this way so I'll stick with it until I stall.

What I hate are the little speed demons who just push wood and play openings no one would dare try OTB, or which would never beat a 2500, but I suppose learning how to bust that is part of becoming a GM, so I endure it.

It's not about putting in the hours, but the YEARS.  When I quit in 1991 I was on track to become about 2650 at age thirty-five.  I looked at those who were around that level and I had no desire to be the next Kevin Spragett.

Thanks to computers, I can now just copy the solution to chess, which wasn't available in the 1990s, just like thanks to Netflix I was able to binge-watch Frasier, which I had missed during the 1990s because I had better things to do,, but which I could now digest in three weeks.

I think playing fast helps with chess instincts. I've definitely lost to bullet players that have no rhyme or reason to their play, besides to move really fast.

I remember you making a thread a while back that went something along the lines of "Who needs 3 minutes to play a game of chess".  What do you think about ten second chess and things like that, StupidGM?

Reality_Checker is quite a cool nickname IMO if you are still thinking of changing Slow_pawn 😎
