Remembering and memorizing

Since I started playing chess, I have not study any openings or endgames. What I rely on most is creative thinking and trying to reach checkmate after avoiding the opponent's threats. I rely on my mind more than memorization. Perhaps I will study them in the future, I don't know. What do you rely on, and is memorization part of the game?
