Resigning too early against strong opposition, should you play on!!?

Majority of players if pitted against stronger opposition do tend to resign early, I had a game on another site against a 2234 rated CCE I blew a whole knight for a pawn due to a tactic by my opponent, I had zero chances positionally but played on and 20 moves later I had picked up a 2nd pawn eventually the game was adjourned at move 46 and I lost the decision and result was given to my opponent? so since I got so close to turning the game around is it not therefore worth playing on! your thoughts on this.
