Ridiculous new "anti-cheating" rule for the World Open.

How would you feel about this suggestion??  Put a camera and a mic in the restrooms and let the TD's moniter it?

That would probably be effective for preventing cheating, but it wouldn't be accepted as a rule for obvious reasons.

Not so obvious, it seems. Or he wouldn't have suggested it!

The reason I asked it is because you refered to it as a facist rule. Then you said the're overstepping their reach. Which one is it??  You don't like the rule, or you don't like the results??

RonaldJosephCote

"Chess people appear to be cheats".  That's what I was getting at. Historically the men's room is where everybody thinks they can get away with anything. Between texting, smartphones, blue tooth, programs, etc. Everything cheaters can do, their gonna try to push the envelope. The person who does the most complaining is probably the cheat. Most hotels will have cameras in the rest rooms in the future due to liability.

If you are not a cheater, I don't see why you'd have a problem (or a thought for that matter) with this "rule". Besides, cellphones and the way they're used today, is total death of humanity. But that's another story...

So?

MSteen

I am 62, and I must say that I just ABHOR the way cell phones have taken over people's lives. Yes, I'm an antique, and I grew up in an era where the only phone we had was a rotary on the kitchen counter. So I'll admit to some bias here. BUT WE STAYED IN TOUCH! Don't ask me how, but when my friends and family wanted to talk to me, we worked it out.

Just put the d*** cell phone in the room and forget about it during the tournament. Unless you're the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, you don't need it. Everyone who's important in your life knows you're at the tournament, and everyone else can just leave a message. I just don't see what the issue is.

I am 35 and I agree with you. I have always been a tech pioneer, even now I am creating my own designed, oldschool z80 computer (ok, that is not pioneering anymore, but still fun and quite an undertaking to do and learn). I do have a cellphone. That I leave at home. Unless I really know I need to call someone or will get a call. If I play chess... I turn the darn thing off. Oh and while I was an early adopter of cellphones.... Please... when you are on a train, going somewhere. Take a book with you, talk to the person next to you in the train. But don't start chatting with me telling me you are on a train and bored. I am not bored, so please don't bore me. Read a book.

We have more ways than ever to talk to people and we use it to say absolutely nothing. It's insane.

(sorry, had to get that of my mind)

JGambit

I agree MSteen.

To add idiots forget that not having your phone on you does not mean instant death.

I never said this.

MrDamonSmith

Bill Goichberg is the self appointed, grand, exhalted, all powerful ruling TD of the universe. All players in his tournaments must bow down & grovel to his majestys whims. That's why he will make any rule he see fit. Got any more questions? Read this again.

Wilbert_78

Maybe, just maybe, the toilets they speak about here, are shared with the people who are still playing their game...

MrDamonSmith

Hmmmmm. Good point. They might actually be a good place to conceal a chess playing program for instance for a certain player at a certain time. Yes, just maybe.................

heister

I regularly lose my cell phone.. just so I can practice for the event.

RonaldJosephCote

Silent Knight;  Your right, I'm sorry. I stand corrected. It was post #9 that said it was facist. Not you.

You are missing the fairly obvious purpose of this rule. A bathroom is a private place. If you have a laptop or cellphone out anywhere near the playing area and think people will not be looking at you, you are ignorant. It is fairly obvious to notice a player get up and move towards someone with an electronic device and "sneak a peek." But, in the bathroom there is not much security that can go on. Theoretically, you can relay moves but that is also obvious. The bathroom is the easiest place to cheat. Take that away and you make cheating more difficult, making it harder makes people less likely to do it.

sisu

It's very simple. The bathroom is part of the playing area. No phones in the playing area. An inconvenience to some perhaps, but for that small inconvenience be happy that it will reduce cheating. You are there for the chess tournament not broadcasting.

FIDE should make a new rule saying that all phones need to be held by the tournament director, and not anywhere else in the playing area, like in people's bags. Collect them afterwards, go outside and make your calls. During a tournament round, players are not allowed outside of the playing area, except with express permission of the TD.

Thank you post 63+64.  Silent Knight; you did refer to it as silly and ridiculous in other post.  Its the same at airports. I think removing your shoes is silly. But if it makes the plane safer, than I don't mind the inconvenience.  I also agree with having TD's collect phones.

TheOldReb

People who cant do without their phones long enough to play tournament chess should just stay home and play with their phones . Electronic devices shouldnt be allowed in the playing " area " , period .

Addiction...If you cant leave any of your electroinic devices in your room for part of a day, youre addicted.

Removing your shoes is silly and doesn't improve flight security.

No one has made this argument.
