I was sooo hoping this would be an 1.e4 versus 1.d4 discussion. I'll pretend it is.

Yes, one should know when to throw in the towel, but these endless complaints of having to play through to checkmate are more annoying than someone playing on in a lost position, or even someone deliberately stalling when they're losing.  Just suck it up and play the game, and if you feel they're being jerks about losing then block them.  But I think this is just one of those problems of playing online that won't ever go away, so either deal with it or stop playing.
