I believe most people can become GM, if they really want to. I think every you guys talk to much about unleranable talent, and forget the ability to work hard, and to want it. A classic exeampel on this, is the Polgar sisters.
I think that all that 'you have to learn chess when your 3 years old, and you have to be 1900 elo at the age of 12' is nonsens. Maby you need much talent to become world champion, but i dont think that much talent is needed to become a 2500 elo GM. Remember, his goal is to become GM, not to achieve 2700 elo.

Nice blog, but i one thing i dont like about it, is that Chess Flash boards you use to show games. Its very small, and i dont like the design and the way the pieces move.

Anyways, good luck! :)

says the guy rated 1900 jk lol well put

Nice try!

What difference does it make, anyway? You rightly said yourself that GMs are no more experts on what other people are capable of than anybody else.

I didn't write that.  Post #185 was by philidor_position.

Tomorrow I will be moving to China to study Mandarin for a year at Xiangtan University.  Although my desire to improve at chess has not waned, and I still believe my project is achievable, I no longer feel able to blog under the ‘Road to Grandmaster’ heading without making chess my first priority.

About this age thing, if you live to age 30 without ever being in contact with and interested in chess, chances are your environment/friends group simply isn't chessy enough to become a real crack.

Based on some of the nasty comments that you have made to me on this forum you twerp maybe you should keep your fat trap - i.e mouth - shut and stop showing the world what a brainless airhead you are.

FYI I beat someone on FICS a week ago who was 2123. I have no talent. None. If I can do that I see no reason why this guy couldn't be a GM. I've passed university level Gaussian calculus. That's a lot harder than chess let me tell you.

If I were the OP I would spend six months on endgames. Famous instructive endgames. Every video on them on this site. Books on em' . Get that good at them that you can convert any material advantage endgame to a win against an engine if a book draw is avoidable.

Once you have that nailed down I am sure that the rest of the task is more than doable.

GM Yasser Seirawan: "Anyone can obtain a grandmaster title after 10 years of hard study regardless of 'natural gifts'"

Interesting - do you have the source for this quote ?

If that was the case then there would be much much much more than 1500 GMs today.

Seirawan never said any such thing.

** 6 YEARS LATER **

Will the U.K. student, with all his confidence and energy, didn't come close to the GM title.

He didn't come close to the IM title.

He didn't even come anywhere near an FM rating.

He did succeed in moving up a notch from Class A, barely.

The verdict is in:
All those "naysayers" on the first page of this topic were CORRECT.
