I'm "old school" I like monopoly. Just thinking outloud
RPG? Chess?

Most chess players probably like RTS (Real Time Strategy) games. Some classics like Age of Empires I & II, Empire Earth, Starcraft, Civilization, and Warcraft.
Civilization may be closest since it is also turn-based. Risk as well.
But I'm sure there are a lot of FPS players and MMORPG or RPG players too.

I love civilization. It is the best PC game ever made. Sid Meyer is a god. I have wasted at least 10,000 hours on that game.

As far as video games go (excluding digitized board games), turn-based tactics games like FF Tactics would be the closest to chess. Chess is primarily about tactics, with a little bit of strategy, whereas games like Civ are primarily about strategy, with a little bit of tactics.
But I like Monopoly myself.
As for RISK, yes, it is much too long, but for whoever said you should start in Nova Sotia, that sounds like it would only work with four people. In six player RISK, Australia is an unbeatable strategy.
I like strategy board games. This includes some war games and some games that are more abstract. My favorite war games have been Conquest of the Empire and Samurai Swords, although I used to play some of the more advanced Avalon-Hill games like Stalingrad. I wasted many ours with my brothers, cousins, and nephews on Risk in my youth. Games like Stratego, Mastermind, etc. were always welcome. Traditional favorites like chinese checkers, however, were preferred. I went through a period of making traditional games like nine men's morris and halma. Making these traditional games from different cultures has been some of my best fun with games. You can see how chess would hold first place in a psychology like mine.

Kind of.
I can run down a in under 25 seconds with the mentor count and when I get my game into shape I can draw a chart with all the indexes pretty quickly too. Had 2 years as a professional dealer to solidify my skills.

Ah, but that will never give you an edge without counting cards and betting properly. (I mean, realistically, that probably won't give you an edge either, but at least it is possible.)

Actually the Mentor Count is precisely that, a 2 level card counting system complete with betting strategy and plays based on the count(called index plays).
I'll have to look some figures up but on the average rules it boasts ~0.75-1.25% player advantage.

Call me old fashioned, but when I think of RPGs, I think of sitting in some friend's poorly lit basement with some polyhedral dice, getting ready to enter the Tomb of Horrors.
You still see things like that, if your looking. I play a little dungeons and dragons myself (if you would like to make a nerd joke, please do it now or forever hold the comment). They are just in the dark, secretive corners of the library in clubs. lol
I've never played RPG on a board.... I want to tho. But nobody will play with me. Pretty useless to buy DnD or similar without anyone to play with

Starcraft was the best RTS in my opinion. I hope SC2 maintains the tight balance and gaming aspect.
For RPGs, I really enjoyed Morrowind and will eventually start up Oblivion. Love the world and its openness with so much to do and become. On the downside, it wasn't so hard to become a near-invincible bad ass so the everyday world became a little boring.
I also played and enjoyed WoW for a year with my eventually potent ice mage. Gameplay was too simple in the long run so I got bored and had to quit.
Neverwinter Nights was briefly fun too and I really enjoyed grouping up online to run through the campaign. I never got into a decent pen&paper DnD group before that so this gave me a chance to satisfy the DnD jones that I carried with me for many years. I loved the spell effects (again, a magic user for me).
If I could find a great group I'd happily pen&paper some DnD, even at my advanced age.

what the flyin' is RPG ?? I always thought that RPG stood for rocket-propelled grenade
As for Risk - it much better an' shorter since they introduced the 'mission cards' an' modernised the beginning better game is Diplomacy, but it takes forever

I played as many of them as I could from Dune through to Starcraft (does Utopia for the Intellivision count as an RTS? I think it does...) and I agree that their apex was with Starcraft. I've never been into gaming since.

I played a lot of strategy turn based and not games BEFORE knowing chess: they are all there sad on the bookshell that look at me...
I played from 8 thru 10-2 final fantasys then got tired, played starctaft 1, worcraft, dragon quest, civilization and the list is long....
For all those who like risk check out conquer club. I don't play anymore because it's as addictive as chess if not more so.
