Rude

Is rudeness a "thing" in chess? I have been a member for a day, and I have already encountered a horrible person.

I am not complaining, I answered in a manner he deserved and stopped talking to him. However a question did pop in my head. Is that kind of talk part of the culture, or something like that? Or is it just someone's charming personality?

I mean, I am a beginner, if someone doesn't like to play with me they shouldn't bother.   Why play and talk nonsence at the same time?

I can understand phsycological games, but some things are just too much.

Scottrf

Don't remember anyone ever trash talking me.

TetsuoShima

actually i find chess players in general  belong to the better side of the spectrum.

Where there's people, there's rudeness. I don't see any specific association with chess. (I believe it started as an epidemic in supermarkets & promptly spread throughout the world!)

Gloomshroom

Wow, I must be some kind of magnet then. I usually disable chat because of the amount of trashtalking :(

Chess is full of pricks, rude and grouchy types, people with inflated egos who let their rating go to their head who talk down to other players and trash talk (happens alot online) whiners and people who don't like losing.

Disable chat to avoid drama and nonsense.

Thank you all for you kind answers. They cancelled the rude encounter I had. Laughing

I'll be prepared from now on.

I don't know about the majority, but I have seen one or two already Wink

Rudeness is a thing in human nature.  Chess is by no means exempt.

You are some kind of magnet! You attract whatever you think about.

TheGrobe

What you have to realise is that the majority of people on this site are children either in mind or body, but usually both.

Small brain, small intellect, with a limited vocabulary.

Well said, see the post directly above yours for a shinning.

There are still a lot of good people here though.  Try to focus on them and ignore the trash.

"The trash" are trash-coated good people. Focus on the good people in them, and their trash-coating will steadily come off.

Very rarely are chess players rude to each other OTB (unless playing bughouse/fun blitz, and it is understood it's all in good fun), but anything goes online it seems.

Suvel

yea

Suvel

cause they cant get in trouble

its like cyber-bullying

GMegaMan

its not suprising you met a rude person on your first day to be honest

you've got the rich elite toffs who learnt chess when they were one years old and went to their boys only posh schools, where they learnt all about the art of looking down on the common man.

then you've got a lot of convicts who learnt the game in prison whilst killing time

then you've got loads of arty types and math kids who are all up their own butt

a real melting pot of unsavoury types

Life is too short to waste trying to find the good in people that can't seem to find the good in themselves.  Don't waste your time and energy on scumbags, there are much better people that deserve it.
