rules are rules

I had team match against another town and they did show up 1 hour late.

we waited halve an hour and declared the win.

like I say we had declared the win according to the rules, they ask us if we would play anyway, but of course we didn't. So we won 4-0.

afterall rules are rules and we are not sure that they would have played if it was reverse. I think we did the right thing.

So what's the point? Do you feel bad and need some approval?

Avatar of trigs

rules are rules. i agree.

my rule is if you turn into a zombie, i will kill you. so be careful not to get bit.

Avatar of bigpoison

So you were all there together, with chess boards and everything, and you didn't play?

That's a bummer, dude.

maybe a little. afterall playing is the only victory you can be really proud of.

Avatar of goldendog

Not playing at all is a kind of self-screw, don't you think?

It really depends on a nature of the match.

Anyhow, no fair play award for your team this year. Embarassed

and, without fair play, there would be no gold medal for Danish sailing team:

Why not just play for fun?

of course we could have done that but they wanted to play the match. and one player had to go home after we won after the first halve hour.

it has nothing to do with fair play to win by the rules.

Avatar of bobbyDK

if we had played on the rules would have lost value.

the chairman of the club we have played against have already announced that because we did not play on they will team up with the strongest team possible and we will lose 4-0 each time in the future. lol

Yes, your behaviour has nothing to do with fair play.

I'm not judging you, rules are rules, you can score a goal when your opponents goalkeeper is injured, but if you don't:

Sounds like all chessplayers in denmark are immature in one way or another.

Avatar of Dragec

Well, winning is OK, but I believe that a bigger satisfaction would be to play it.

Of course that I don't know all the facts regarding the situation, but based on a short description I would play.

this debate is kind of important because i think most of you would have chosen the win. you cannot expect everybody to live up to your high standards of fairplay.

everybody knew the rules be there on time or lose. that is fair play for both sides.

was it fair play to let us sit and stare at the board for over halve an hour?

and I will repeat again "what do we have rules for if everybody is supposed to bend the rules in order to show fair sportsmanship."

is it fair sportsmanship if someone wins because someone calls the touch piece rules can't we bend it too.

i'd want to play because it was a CHESS tournament and i came to play CHESS. this is coming from someone who hates to lose more than he enjoys winning.

so you would single handed persuade your team mates to stay and play?

everybody was thinking about going home after the win and one called his father to come and pick him up.

remember you staying and playing alone will not make a difference. Only if all four stay it is still a valid team match.

would/could you be the one to make everybody stay and fight.

i'm not making anyone do anything. i'm just voicing my opinion as one of the four (hypothetically). you three are free to run and hide if you see fit.

Ok, rules are rules.

But why didn't one of you (preferable the team captain) make a phone call to the other team, and ask when they could get to the playing area?
