I'm new to chess and am trying to understand :)
You can sacrifice something to rip apart the pawns in front of opponent's King. A common sacrifice is when your opponent's castled short (on their Kingside) and if you have a Bishop attacking their h-pawn, capturing it (putting the King in check) would also expose a piece (ex. a Rook) that's now attacking the Queen because the Bishop moved out of the way
