Magnus vs. Hikaru.

I didn't really think he was insulting Hikaru's level of play. I think it was a fair assessment - Hikaru hasn't been playing his best.

Hikaru would likely agree, too. You could see that, even when defeating Nihal, Hikaru was very unhappy with his own play, especially in his endgame conversions.

The tricky part with Magnus, though, is that players generally get very few chances against him ... he's more likely to punish endgame mistakes than most players ...

When Magnus won the last WCC noone talked about how good he played only how bad his opponent played.   Well this tournament is a whole different narrative because he is making quite the statement.

Yes, I agree.

Magnus has been completely dominant so far - while simultaneously being disappointed in his own play. Even with how thoroughly he has been crushing the field, he still feels that he's not playing at his full potential.

I'm thinking that Hikaru will be the underdog in this match (despite being the reigning champion) ... simply because of the form that Magnus is in right now.

Though, I'll be rooting for a back-and-forth fight between both of them ... like how Ding vs. Hikaru was, last year.
