Hey!
I am trying to make an electronic chessboard that allows me to play in real time via Chess.com or Lichess.org. My goal is to play a physical game of chess and have those moves mirrored in an online game on these platforms. Inspired by DIY projects and some commercial versions like those from DSG, I aim to make this project cost-efficient, targeting a budget of $150-$200.
I'm quite new to this and would appreciate any guidance, insights, or references to similar projects. Here's a brief overview of what I believe the project will entail:
Electronic Components: I'm considering using a Raspberry Pi as the control unit due to its popularity and support but am open to suggestions if there's a better option.
Detection Mechanism: For detecting piece movements, I'm looking into options like reed switches, RFID, or pressure sensors but could use some advice on practicality and cost-effectiveness.
Connectivity: The project will require internet connectivity to interact with the chosen chess platform's API. I'm leaning towards Wi-Fi but am curious about other potentially better methods.
Software: My plan includes leveraging the APIs from Chess.com or Lichess.com to reflect the board's physical moves online. I have a basic understanding of programming but would welcome any tips or resources to help bridge my knowledge gaps.
I'm reaching out to this community hoping to find advice, recommendations on components, insights on working with chess platform APIs, or even someone who has embarked on a similar project and can share their experiences.
If there are existing guides, tutorials, or projects similar to what I'm envisioning, I'd be extremely grateful for links or references. Below are some of the videos that inspired me personally.

These 2 seem to be my favorite! And hopefully, the most doable!
