In chess, there is only one objective: to win. To win, you need a good grip on skills, achieved by memorizing and training.

++ or #: Checkmate (# is usually used to avoid confusion with ++, double check)

1-0: White wins (literally White beats Black by 1 to 0, same meaning)

0-1: (go figure)

1/2-1/2: Draw

The Pieces

Pawn

Symbol: none

The pawn is the most basic of all chess pieces, yet without them, your king would be unsafe, especially in the opening.

How pawns move

Promotions are usually marked with an =, as in 1. f8=R, but it ocassionally is written without =, as in f8R.
Knight
Symbol: N
The Knights are useful close-range weapons, adept at forking (see below) and are usually the second and/or third piece(s) moved into battle.
How they move
A fork is demonstrated above. It is one of the basic tactics in chess.
