Should chess be a sport? why--> definitioon of sport:

An activity involving physical exertion and skill that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often undertaken competitively.

An active pastime; recreation.

Chess is a sport.

why

You have already explained why in your first post?

Sometimes confusion exists by those thinking chess is not physical-activity but in fact it is (physical and mental).

Try playing chess for 7-hrs then see if you are physically/mentally exhausted by that competitive-activity.

Darts? Snooker??

Then why not chess???

Conflagration_Planet

That's got to be the most boring argument ever. Whether or not chess is a sport. All ready been asked too many times.

Obviously because throwing darts and shooting billiard balls are physical activities.

Moving pieces is physical activity.

I don't think darts, snookers or even shooting are "real sports" but some of them are olympics, so i don't see why not chess.

Chess moves are the result of mental activity, not physical. Making the move on the board is merely the physical representation of that mental activity and are merely incidental. The result is not decided by how accurately or gracefully you place the piece on the square.

Yawn...

Sorry to say this doofus but moving your arm/hands is physical.

Now we could argue about the colour of the sky or the sea but is that really necessary?

Agree, that part can just as easily be done by reading the moves, as in blindfold chess.

Or if you were disabled, someone could move the pieces for you. You're still playing, but not taking part in a physical activity.

I'll call chess whatever you want as long as you keep it out of the Olympics.

So since playstation football/tennis etc exist then those activities can no longer be classified as ''sport''?

Not having to physically move the pieces has no impact on the quality of chess.

Not sure what is so hard for you to understand about it.

Picture it... it's the opening ceremony. The sprinters come out first, muscled and beautiful, followed by the equally muscled + beautiful gymnasts, swimmers, etc etc. Then come the chess players.

It's the last thing chess needs.
