Should chess be a sport and put on tv?

Actually, it was a two part question.  Next time I see one, perhaps I should contact you to ask which part I should answer.

I can't see chess on TV being popular.  What next? Televised snooker or darts?  Come on, be serious.  Tongue out  P.s. I did watch The Master Game on BBC2 and really enjoyed it although I didnt play much then.

I love playing chess but there is no way that it should be considered a sport.

It is already on youtube (that's tv for the current generation) here is an example:

Chess is no more of a sport than Nascar or Fishing

Yes, please do.

I would prefer to see chess games over the Internet because it's cheaper and more interactive than broadcast television. Already you can watch the board, kibitz, and listen to GM commentary while games are in-progress. Video streams would be nice!

By that logic, should arguing with my housemate be considered a sport?

Chess takes about as much physical training as driving to McDonalds to get a Big Mac.

actually, debating is considered a sport, or at least akin to it. And it does require physical stamina, albiet not the same type as you would normally think, but you do have to sit at a board for hours at a time while maintaining mental clarity and concentration.

Here is another internet "tv" site. Perhaps there are others as well:

Everything requires a certain amount of physical stamina.  When catergorizing, one must draw lines.  These lines need to be practical and are usually based on the relative differences between the objects of catergorization.  Relative to other games, such as baseball and football, chess is not a physical activity.

I think chess is a sport already u get limeted pize money at the smallest tournements  their is also alot of time and effort put in to it as for how many fat grandmasters raymond keene seems to be a salad dodger

Physical activity makes people feel better/more positive etc and is no doubt a good attribute to have when entering a chess game. However, chess itself, as in glaying the game exerts no physial pressure whatsoever on the player. Therefore, it is not a sport.

I don't know that the poker analogies really "hold" up.  Internet poker has done a lot for the resurging interest in hold 'em, and while there's great sites like chess.com and chessgames.com, not to mention the ICC and whatever else, I'm not sure there's a mystique surrounding chess like there is around gambling.  Also, I used to be a pretty competitive fencer, and fencing is most definitely a sport, but our matches and tournaments were never on TV, even though my club had the top male and female competitors in the under 18 bracket.

I've never understood why chess is considered a sport, but it would great to have it on TV. I think it's feasible: in Japan go games are regularly televised, and go generally takes longer to play than chess.

I would say yes. It is a sport. I don't believe it would be put on T.V. Live. They might just show updates of a game or whenever someone makes a move. I don't really see it making the top 10 plays of Sportscenter.

I would love to see chess on TV, but fencing first.

martial arts is violent and it can be used as defence chess however.... is not helpful at all, but it is still fun but non-chess people can use it to fall asleep Tongue out
