Not having to physically move the pieces has no impact on the quality of chess.

Not sure what is so hard for you to understand about it.

Not having to physically kick the ball has no impact on the quality of the game.

you don't have to be good at the real thing to be great at the game

Post 23 is one of the worse I've ever read. I'm too embarrassed to even quote it incase someone thinks I wrote it.

That's got to be the most boring argument ever. Whether or not chess is a sport. All ready been asked too many times.

wise man

the arguments in this thread are hilarious.
on the subject of video games, we already have electronic sports btw

disclaimer: i don't have any point in posting this - maybe provoking another argument? also post was slightly edited for clarity

You think is all ''people'' making the chess moves here Scottrf?

Is no different to computer-games mostly and para-olympic football is still ''football'' even although they do not ''kick'' the damn thing.

Okay.

But is chess a sport or not? :)

bhoopalan

I always practice chess using my pc. I play with great engines... online and practice. I use this knowledge and also win many. (I've won tournaments at office and won friends just with this knowledge. ) Can I do the same for any other sport like football or baseball?

I practice football online regularly. Without even moving my leg an inch. I start to win football matches continuesly. After that I go to football ground and win??? I would straight away laugh at someone if he/she has such an opinion. I seriously doubt how a person who has such an opinion could even play chess. Because chess is 'mind' game.

urkur

its a "mentel" sport :)

netzach

Totally mentel.

Chess moves are the result of mental activity, not physical. Making the move on the board is merely the physical representation of that mental activity and are merely incidental. The result is not decided by how accurately or gracefully you place the piece on the square.

Agree, that part can just as easily be done by reading the moves, as in blindfold chess.

Or if you were disabled, someone could move the pieces for you. You're still playing, but not taking part in a physical activity.

So since playstation football/tennis etc exist then those activities can no longer be classified as ''sport''?

Playstation tennis/football are not the same as real tennis/football. Playstation football is not a sport. Real football is a sport.

Blasted-graphics.

You mean it's not real!
